Greenwood was a small hamlet south of the Dominion Atlantic Railway’s Kingston Station. In 1942, the Royal Air Force established RAF Station Greenwood and built an aerodrome on nearby farmland to provide a facility for training aircrew under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The Royal Canadian Air Force took over the facility in 1944, renaming it RCAF Station Greenwood, a name it maintained until the February 1, 1968 unification of the Canadian Forces which saw the airfield and associated facilities renamed CFB Greenwood.
During the 1970s–2000s, the village of Greenwood expanded in population as numerous other air force bases in eastern Canada closed and their aircraft and personnel consolidated at CFB Greenwood.
Today, the village and base’s combined population numbers approximately 4,500. The village hosts numerous services and is also the location of the Greenwood Mall, the largest shopping centre in the western part of the Annapolis Valley.
Located on Route 201 and just 3 kilometres off the 101 Highway, south through the Village of Kingston, can be found the thriving community of Greenwood. The Village of Greenwood and 14 Wing Personnel Married Quarter’s together have a combined population of approximately 4,500 people.
The Greenwood Mall has over 60 shops to choose from, including Roo’s, a giant indoor play area for children, as well as the Zellers strip mall. The Village also features numerous dining out experiences and the convenience of 24 Hour grocery shopping, banking and gas outlets and recreational swimming, bowling etc. The Military Museum is a must for anyone with ties to the military who may be travelling throughout the area.
As a prelude to Canada Day celebrations on July 1st, Greenwood welcomes all to the annual Fireworks display, which takes place at the Civic grounds on Central Avenue. Come out and join us in Fun, Food and Fellowship as we celebrate our nations birthday.
